Why Brown Girls Need Affirmations

Like many black women in my age group, I first became aware of using affirmations when I began watching Gabrielle Union on “Being Mary Jane”. The character Mary Jane has the windows and mirrors in her home covered in post-it notes with affirmations. On the show the character appears to have it all together, but we soon learn that she was just trying to keep it all together like the rest of us. There are so many simple ways to incorporate affirmations into your daily life there are even apps that will send you daily notifications that will remind you and give you affirmations to say to yourself.

Often, I get the privilege of speaking to girls about self-love and self-esteem. I usually talk about affirmations with them because it is such an easy way to speak life into yourself daily. The first thing I usually ask is for them to write one thing they love about themselves. And let me tell you the struggle is real they often just sit there with blank looks on their faces. The next thing I do is ask their friends to share something they love about another girl in the group (they usually have friends with them because middle/high school girls travel in packs), usually their friends have many good things to share. When the girls hear all of the amazing attributes they have I can see the “Ah Ha” moments take place. It is sad to think that our girls are not aware of all of the amazing talents and gifts that they have. We must instill in them self-love and teach them ways to incorporate positive self-talk into their daily routine.

Often, we are harder on ourselves than anyone else and affirmations are gentle reminders of how amazing we are in our own way. If you are looking for a few easy affirmations to share with your girls check our store for printable affirmation cards. Once your girls have practiced using the affirmations encourage them to write their own and to keep them with them for times when they need a quick boost.

I would love to share a lesson on self-love with your girls. If you are interested in working with me, click here to schedule a call to discuss your needs.
