As educators and advocates we know that it is crucial that children are reading each night, however, it is difficult to encourage children to read when none of the characters in the books look like them or face the issues they face. In the past it was quite difficult to find books in which the characters looked like our girls. Recently authors especially Black and Brown female authors have been writing books with amazing characters just like our girls.

The Innocent Brown Girl Project has compiled a list of 250 books that every Brown Girl should read. Our book list is separated into categories that can help you support your girls. The categories include beauty, belonging/identity, courage, determination, education, family/culture, friendship, fun, growing up, impact, perseverance, problem solving, and strength. The list is also separated by grade level and ethnicity. Higher level books are a great tool to use when reading-aloud with younger scholars.

This book list is a great way to jumpstart a classroom or home library for your girls. To download the list, click here, once you enter your email address the list will come to your inbox. Be sure to check back often for more valuable resources to support our girls.
